Managing By The Numbers
This is a talk that I gave at Shopping.com and eBay when I worked there.
It presents a numbers oriented approach to general management that fits well with web businesses that are almost entirely measurable. It discusses several topics related to measurement and metrics including:
- The difference between a good metrics and bad metrics
- How many different numbers you should look at each day
- Different ways to look at data
- How to spot patterns
- The 80/20 rule as it applies to the web
…and a bunch of other topics.
The most important thing it does though is to convey that numbers oriented management is more of a mindset and a discipline than anything else. Like any discipline, it requires daily practice and dedication. There is a certain rhythm and pace to this style of management. With practice and patience, it will become as natural as playing an instrument or tending a garden.
