Some new processing work. click the mouse to change the colors and start new shoots growing. This has a really cool texture if you render it at the high resolution.
Here’s a digital take on the 8th painting in the ox herding series.

No Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition v 1.4.1 support for APPLET!!

It looks different every time. Here are some random renderings that I liked:

Here is more of a spherical version:

And here is a hi-res image over here, and a little cut-out to give you a sense for the texture:

For years, New York has been trying to clean up the East Bank of the Hudson River. There is a longstanding project to transform the run-down piers into parkland.

Kristin and I lived one block from the river. There is a fenced off strip near the river full of equipment and supplies for the construction project. They had a stack of these sewer grates sitting there waiting to be installed. I noticed that they were already beginning to show some signs of age even before they had served any productive purpose. I shot this picture one day in the Summer of 2001. It was about 90 degrees out, and the metal was hot to the touch.

A few months later, they removed all of the supplies from this area to make room for the crews that cleaned the debris from September 11th. I still don’t think they have installed any of these things yet…

This is the entrance to the the Subway station on 23rd and 6th, the F line. For two years, this was my train stop.

One of my first days in New York, I got out of the train at this station and was immediately struck by the feel of the place. It was raining that day, and there was water dripping everywhere. The paint was peeling off the concrete walls, and the flouresent lights were flickering and on the verge of shorting out.

I remember thinking how futile it must be to build and maintain something so big and complex under ground. It’s too volatile down there, too active. The water and the rust eat away at everything. There is also a smell of wetness. Not a terrible stench really, but a smell that reminds you that things are rotting away.

This was taken on a winter evening after work. It was shot from the middle of the stairs leading into the station.

I had to wait for the crowds to thin out so I could get the shot without blocking the stairway.

I used to live on one of the few streets in the West Village that is still made of brick pavers. After it rains, the street gets soft and buckles under the weight of the trucks that make deliveries to the warehouse next door.

The brown dot at the top of this shot is a three foot wide mud-filled pothole. Street crews come out to replace and reorganize the pavers every now and then, but the street is always uneven. I ride my motorcycle down it, and it feels like a rollercoaster. This shot was made after a fall rain.

I held the camera as far out of the window as I could and shot straight down.

Kristin says it looks like dragon skin.

There is a small Jazz club on Seventh and Charles. It’s hidden under a ratty West Village two-flat on the garden level.

Except for this back door, the building is relatively well kept. The back door is almost falling out of a narrow doorframe in the rear of the building. It is a little smaller than an average door. If you were tall, you’d probably hit your head on it.

It looks like it was covered with tar to help keep the wood together. The tar is wearing off though, and the rotten wood is beginning to show through, particularly at the bottom of the door.

This is a close up of the bottom two feet or so.

This is the bottom of the wall at the cafe on Hudson street where I go for coffee. Its a small place, but very popular. It usually has a line thats about 15 feet long, which is just a few feet longer than the store. As a result, the door is usually held open by the last person in line.

In the summer, the place is cooled by a loud and ineffective air conditioner, which is perched in a window box over the front door. The air conditioner drips its condensation out of a little tube, which is supposed to run off onto the sidewalk. When the people hold the door open though, the tube gets jammed up against the wall, and it trickles its water onto the wood until it is soaked, then it drips off the bottom of the waterlogged wall into a little puddle on the ground.

The cafe is on Hudson and Perry. I think it’s called Panini Gusto, but I always refer to it as Segafredo Zanetti thanks to a large sign that advertises a brand of Italian coffee that they sell there.

This building was one of the last hangers-on from the old days. When I shot this picture, it was for sale. The sign in the window read “Great place for a hot new restaurant”…
